Francis Wren, MD

Francis J Wren, MD (Frank) founded Jersey Urology Group with Doctors Schutz and Piskun with one goal in mind: To bring university level care to our neighbors at the Jersey Shore. Dr. Wren attended the University of Scranton on a full presidential scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with degrees in both Philosophy and Biology while earning the University’s Bernard and Kathryn Hyland award for Excellence in Biology given to the highest ranked graduate in biology as well as the Excellence in Philosophy award given to the highest ranked graduate in philosophy. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania and served as President of the Medical Student Government. He graduated with his Medical Degree and was awarded the Morris Ginsburg Prize, a faculty award given to the graduate who best demonstrates the qualities of the ideal physician.

He did his general surgical internship and urology residency training at the Penn State/Milton S Hershey Medical Center. While a resident, he won the 39th Annual Howard Pollack Radiology Competition of the MidAtlantic Section of the American Urological Association. He also completed the National Urology Preceptor Program in female pelvic medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. At graduation, he was awarded the Pfizer Scholars in Urology Award. He is now currently Board Certified in Urology.

His clinical interest in practice is medical and surgical management of female and male voiding dysfunction including leakage, retention, pelvic pain, and voiding symptoms. He has lectured frequently on voiding dysfunction. He focuses on medical quality improvement with a goal of achieving better measured patient outcomes with higher patient satisfaction at a low cost to society. He serves as a consultant to many diverse medical practices to help them achieve these higher patient outcome, satisfaction, and quality metrics while maintaining cost control.

Dr. Wren also works as President of Jersey Urology Group. He also serves our local community as a Board Member for Atlanticare Regional Health System and is Vice Chairman of the System Quality Committee. His personal interests include spending time with his wife and children as well as serving the needs of his local community.

Dr. Andrew L. Hirsh is a certified Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and an expert in male and female voiding dysfunction.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and completed his post-baccalaureate in Premedical Sciences at Columbia University. From there, he went on to medical school at the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he graduated
after being inducted to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Dr. Hirsh then completed an internship in General Surgery at Columbia University in New York, and a surgical subspecialty Residency in Urology also at Columbia University. He served as Chief Resident in Urology from 2009-2010. At Columbia, Dr. Hirsh was fortunate to train under numerous leaders in the advancing minimally invasive techniques in Urology.

In New York, Dr. Hirsh won second prize at the Valentine Resident Research Contest for his research in advanced urology.

Dr. Hirsh is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of voiding dysfunction, with a specialty focus in the medical and surgical treatment of enlarging prostates. His training included high volume minimally invasive procedures, including laparoscopic, robotic surgery, and endoscopic procedures. He is a recognized leader in the field, adopting new technologies to help his patients. Most recently, Dr. Hirsh has expanded his practice to include the Urolift procedure for men with enlarged prostates. He performed the first Urolift in the State of New Jersey.

Dr Hirsh is focused on providing high quality comprehensive patient care and is competent in all facets of Urology. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive surgery for voiding dysfunction.

When not working, Dr. Hirsh enjoys time with his wife, Dr. Alina Hirsh, and their three daughters.

Abraham Spence, MD joins Jersey Urology Group after completing his training in Urology at the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He grew up in Pittsford, New York, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Rochester earning degrees in Biology as well as Chemistry with highest distinction. He received his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Dr. Spence completed his General Surgical Internship at the University of Pennsylvania, and Urology residency at the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Throughout his surgical training, he received the Pollack Award for the highest absolute score on the in-service examination, as well as the Outstanding Scholar in Urology Award from the University of Pennsylvania Division of Urology in 2013. He also was the recipient of the CAP award from the University of Pennsylvania Department of Radiology on two separate occasions. He has particular interests in urologic oncology, as well as minimally invasive surgery including both robotic surgery and laparo-endoscopic surgery. During residency, he completed several specialty training courses including a preceptorship in robotic surgery in Ohio, as well as an advanced biosurgery preceptorship and workshop focusing on robotic partial nephrectomy in San Diego, California. He also has a strong interest in Men’s Health both preceding and following interventions for cancer of the urinary tract. He completed additional specialty training including the Advanced Training in Penile and Incontinence Prosthetic Surgery in Tampa Florida, the Surgical Symposium and Training for Prosthetic Surgery in Las Vegas, as well as the Current Trends in the Treatment of BPH at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Spence places the highest priority on individualizing each patient’s care to offer a comprehensive treatment plan to help ensure the best patient outcomes.

Dr. Michael Schutz was born in Newport News, VA and grew up in Flemington, NJ. He attended Rutgers University and New Jersey Medical School where he graduated in 1985.

He completed his Urology Residency there in 1990. He completed a Urologic Oncology fellowship at the University of Colorado in 1991. He joined the faculty at the University of Arkansas in 1991. He became the Chief of Urologic Oncology at the University of Arkansas and Chief of Urology at the JL McClellan VA Medical Center in Little Rock during his tenure. He relocated to South Jersey in 1996 and formed Jersey Urology Group in 2006 with Dr. Wren and Piskun.

He was selected as a “Top Doc” in NJ Monthly Magazine. He is former President of the Medical Staff at Shore Memorial Hospital.

He is a founding member of the American Society for Men’s Health and Co-Director of the Institute for Men’s Health. His clinical interests are Prostate, Bladder, Kidney Cancer and Testis Cancer and Men’s Health and lifestyle. He is the Health and Wellness consultant for Robert Irvine of the Food Network and writes a health and wellness blog for his website.

Dr. Piskun was born in Rockland County, NY. He went to college at the University of Virginia where he was a varsity wrestler. After finishing medical school at Georgetown University, he completed residency at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical center. He then joined Dr. Wren, his former chief resident, to work for Jersey Urology Group.

Dr. Piskun is married with three children and is active in church and youth athletics. He currently resides in Egg Harbor Township with his family.

Dr. Lehrfeld was born in Rockland County, NY. He studied Chemistry at theJohns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and later obtained his Medical Doctorate at Boston University School of Medicine. He returned to Baltimore to complete his residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He then completed a one year fellowship in minimally invasive Urology at the University of Pennsylvania. During his training, he published articles on bladder and sexual dysfunction, urologic oncology, as well as minimally invasive urology.

Dr. Lehrfeld is also a specialist in Medical Informatics, a field which focuses on advancing the quality of health care delivered by utilizing technology. Dr. Lehrfeld is one of fewer than five urologists in the country who is dual board certified in both Urology and Clinical Informatics. He currently serves as the Chief Medical Information Officer at Jersey Urology Group, and also performs consulting work for other physician groups to help them improve their efficiency and the quality of care provided to patients.

Dr. Lehrfeld currently resides in Egg Harbor Township, NJ with his wife, two daughters, and Wheaton terrier.
